Singing Lessons

QUESTIONS
You probably have a few questions. If they aren't answered here, feel free to message me!

How do online lessons work?
We schedule a lesson time on zoom. I send you everything by email or using the dropbox, so you’ll need a folder on your computer/iPad/phone or use the ‘files’ application on an iPhone/iPad to keep everything in one place and easy to find. For me, printed out sheet music/lyric sheets work best so that you can make notes on it. Having everything ready before the lesson means we can use all the time of our lesson on singing.

How much does it cost?
Lessons are £70 an hour.
For 18-30s, lessons are £60 an hour. Please do get in touch if you still can't afford this (times are hard for young people!)
For worship leaders, anyone in ministry, charity workers or those in the NHS, lessons are £60 an hour.
You can pay via bank transfer or paypal.

Is there a minimum number of lessons and do you have a contract?
There is no minimum number of lessons you can have but I recommend having at least five. Lessons are paid for in advance.
If you can’t make a lesson, please tell me at least 24 hours in advance and we will rearrange it. If you don’t ‘arrive’ for your lesson, I’m afraid i can’t give you a refund. If you are ill, I am happy to rearrange it for you. Overall, I am generally quite flexible when I'm working with lovely people!

What does a typical lesson look like?
We start each lesson after a brief catch up with some vocal exercises to warm up and train the voice. This could be 5 minutes or it could be 25 depending on what you need and want! You will have access to my online vocal exercise library to learn and practice these exercises at home too.
The rest of lesson is dedicated to learning and performing songs. We may go back to an exercise if it will help. The more prepared you are the more time we get to spend on songs, so make sure to have all your materials - sheet music and backing tracks ready to hand. Even better, try to learn the lyrics and melody from memory as soon as you can as then you can focus totally on your voice and performance!
How much practice should I do?
The more practise you do, the better you get! Regularity is key - 10 to 15 minutes every day is a good start, using the vocal exercise library (2 or 3 exercises) and then working on songs with your backing tracks and any recordings I have sent. For more advanced pupils, longer stretches are useful, doing 30-45 minutes three/four times a week will mean you improve very fast!

Do you ever teach in person?
Occasionally yes. I live in Worcester Park, Surrey.

What will I need for an online lesson?
You need a computer, laptop or iPad set up at the right height, preferably near the router at home for the best WiFi service. Plug in some headphones. Either use the laptop/iPad mic or the mic on your headphones - or, if you are more advanced, use a condenser microphone. I can help you set this up if you need.
You will also need a separate device, eg phone or iPad to play the backing tracks.
To make the most of our lesson, you’ll need to make notes, and the best way to do this is on the sheet music/lyric sheet you are learning. So either
- print it off in advance or
- have it on another device and take notes on a separate note pad or
- use the edit /pencil function on your device’s PDF viewer.

Am I too old to start singing lessons?
No! Anyone can improve at any age. It is actually beneficial to keep taking lessons as you age, especially going through hormonal changes or post menopause. There is always so much to learn - the voice fascinates me!

Do you enter older clients for exams?
I spent many a year teaching young people and coaching them through exams, and a fair few adults too. I am happy to enter anyone for an exam if they would like to, I personally took a Rockschool Grade 8 a few years ago just for fun!

Do you teach sight singing, aural and theory?
Yes! Once again, I have spent many years teaching young people musical skills and am happy to teach adults the same. Signt singing is such a useful skill to have for both amateurs and professionals.

When can I have lessons?
I currently have some space on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday daytimes.

Are there any other costs?
Other costs may be buying sheet music and backing tracks for songs you would like to do that I don't already have. I can find and buy these for you if you would like the help.

How do I pay?
At the moment, I am taking payments from direct bank transfers and via paypal.
