Even if at the moment you can't pull off a riff or run, don't despair. Practice is everything! Scroll down for my top tips for learning to riff and check out these shorts.
1.) Break down the riff in to parts, make sure you learn it correctly
2.) Sing it slowly part by part until you have the notes - make sure you have part 1 correct before adding part 2, 3 ,4.
3.) Sing all the parts together and and speed it up incrementally.
4.) Sing it in a different rhythm (or two) to get the notes really 'in' your muscle memory.
5.) Use movement to help you - clap the rhythm, or pretend you're playing a xylophone as you sing.
6.) Keeping your mouth open will probably help and guard against tension in the jaw.
7.) Finally, look in a mirror to check you aren't unnecessarily moving your jaw or shoulders.
Here are some of my YouTube shorts you can practice with. You can find more on my instagram if you scroll back! Let me know how you get on!
